Split
Split is one of the most beautiful Mediterranean cities. Most famous for the Diocletian's Palace, from where the emperor Diocletian ruled the Roman Empire.
Split is the largest city of the historic Croatian region of Dalmatia, and its unofficial capital. Omis is located about 35 km southeast of Split. Split is second largest city in the Croatia (after Zagreb - Croatian capital), and has bout 450 000 residents.
Traditionally, age of Split is estimated at 1700 years. Founding of Split is connected with the construction of Diocletian's Palace. But lots of archaeological studies dates founding of Split back to the 6th century BC as a Greek colony of Aspalathos. Probably name of Split comes from there. The history of Split is truly enormous and the biggest attraction is definitely the Diocletian's Palace. The Roman emperor Diocletian ruled the entire Roman Empire from Split. Walls of the palace are large and they surround the center of Split.
Sights that definitely must be seen in Split are, as already mentioned, Diocletian's Palace, Chatedral of Saint Duje from the fourth century (Chatedral is part of the palace walls), nature park Marjan hill (Marjan hill is situated practically in the center of the Split). Beautiful stadium of Poljud, where the famous football club Hajduk Split plays. Stadium of Poljud is one of the most beautiful stadiums in this part of Europe.
During the whole summer lots of different cultural manifestations are held. That is famous Split cultural summer, during which the theater plays are held under the open sky. Also during the summer in Split there are lots of concerts of famous pop and rock artist, sport events and various exibitions like the days of Diocletian.
